Goldrill Beck To Side Farm
Goldrill Beck
To Side Farm

The third walk of the day for Molly n' Me started at 18:30hrs from Patterdale. Goldrill Beck feeds Ullswater with the waters of Patterdale and surrounding fells; the track to Side Farm is well-used for access to the farm, their campsite and the "steamer" walk to/from Howtown.

Place Fell Ascent

Place Fell Ascent

Following on from the direct climb of Sheffield Pike two days ago, I decided to give Place Fell similar treatment. This route, however, can be recommended and is free of danger. It is a scramble at times but nothing too scary, not suitable for pushchairs. Here's a photo of this evening's target fell:

Refrehsments are available at their cafe during normal walking hours.

Quarry (disused)

It is possible to get into this one, the water entering is drained so you won't need to swim. I couldn't find an easy way of getting Molly in and she wouldn't have wanted me to go in and leave her. So, along with Jack's Rake and the steep climb on Glaramara, this is to added to stuff I won't be doing for a few years. Going to Blackpool is another, but that has nowt to do with the dog.

The Tree

Next target is the tree up there - sheep tracks and narrow watercourses make for easier transit than trudging through the braken.

Arnison Crag

Arnison Crag

If you approach the Wainwright concept from the start and open up Book One with a nervous enthusiasm for writings from a time before most of the things we take for granted nowadays, the first fell is Arnison Crag - the fell closest to the camera above Patterdale (village). Not many fells are limted to just four pages, but AC is one of them. Do you know which fell warrants the most pages?

Molly the Collie

Molly The Collie

This is the first time I will have climbed three separate Lakeland Fells on three different walks, on the same day. Do I win a prize?

Hartsop-Above-How

is the narrow ridge, in sunlight, with Brotherswater to the left and the substantial bulk of Middle Dodd and Red Screes in the background.

These other two fells were climbed by us earlier today.

Descent Route

We head off the summit for Boredale Hause.

The repaired path may look utilitarian, but believe me, it's a lot better than the mess we inherited from previous generations of fellwalkers. I wonder how many retired walkers, with geraniums growing out of their tatty and redundant boots contribute funds to fell-repairing projects?

Side Cottage

Side Cottage

Place Fell has it all! Great ascent routes, a hidden cave, fantastic views, the shoreline of Ullswater, a modest height to suit many abilities, a cafe at Side Farm, a pub in Patterdale and it never rains on Place Fell (well not so far on my 10 ascents to date).

Walkers: Molly The Dog and Me.

Route: Patterdale parking, outside one of the community buildings (it doesn't say you shouldn't), Side Farm, up via gullies, trees and crags, Summit, Boredale Hause, Side Cottage and back to Patterdale.

Greetings: Zero - apart from the campers.

Weather: Evening sunshine declining to hazy, getting ready for tomorrow's rain.

Time Taken: 2 hours 40 minutes over a distance of about 5 miles.
